Ministry Head:  Denise Flanagan – Assistant Coordinator of Religious Education, (973) 992-9496

Charter / Mission: To provide the young children of our parish (grades K-7) with the opportunity to learn about their Catholic faith and to establish a personal relationship with Jesus. This Ministry seeks to create an atmosphere that is interactive, faith based and modeled after the love of Jesus. Lessons are based on written materials in the form of text and workbooks, use of plays to illustrate the life of Jesus and special events to reinforce the basic principles of and richness of our Catholic faith and to keep the children engaged with and connected to the parish family.

Skills & Talents of Members: Must be person of faith with a love of children and the desire to share your faith with them. Must be willing to learn a body of material required per grade level and be able to communicate the main focus of each lesson by word and example.

Meeting Times / Assignment Frequency: Religious Education classes are held on Sundays from 10 – 11:15 am (typically from September through April). There is also a summer Religious Education Program that consists of eight sessions (from 9 am to 1 pm) which begins at the end of June/beginning of July and runs for 8 consecutive sessions. St. Raphael’s also offers a Home Option where parents can teach their children in their own home. The church supplies the teaching material and teacher aids. The Home Option program ends with a discussion between the children and the Director of Religious Education to understand what the children learned.

What Does Our Ministry Need Today?  We need volunteer catechists willing to share their faith with the children of the parish.
